Health 


Buy generic drugs when ever possible.  You can save 30% to 70% depending upon the prescription.  If your insurance offers mail order rx services, you can substantially lower your costs for medication. Always ask your doctor for free samples of medications before filling a prescription. Always ask your doctor to write for the maximum amount of pills your plan will cover, to reduce costs.  

Take advantage of health care savings plans at work that put pretax dollars into a flexible spending account.  Use it to pay for contact lenses, doctor co payment, insurance deductibles and weight loss programs

Ask your doctor to waive or lower fees, if you have frequent appointments.  

Some insurance companies will offer discounts on gym memberships or exercise equipment.  Check with your insurance company or Human resources department to see what benefits are available on your plan. Like wise see if your regular gym visits or smoking cessation program will allow you to take money off your insurance premium.

Buy used exercise equipment as a fraction of the cost of new on eBay, Yahoo auctions, or Craigs-List

If you're eye prescription hasn't changed you can often get a new pair of eye glasses on line for as little as $40.  Online sites will walk through the specific information needed.  

Rewards Programs

Take advantage of rewards programs.  Do most of your online shopping through sites that let members earn vacation, frequent-flier miles or gift cards.  Membership is free and you earn points by shopping, filling out surveys and visiting web sites. One particularly good site is Mypoints.com. Here you are given points for reading email, taking surveys, trying products or buying merchandise online.  You then trade those points for gift cards that can be used in a variety of places.  Save for college by using Upromise to get free money for higher education

Earn free money for savings bonds.  At bond rewards, every time you buy something, a percentage of the sale is put towards buying a savings bond. 

Do you have several frequent user programs and you want to combine the points together into one account?  Try Points.com.  This program lets you combine points from several airlines, hotels, & retailers into one account to allow you to finally reach that level where you can redeem your points for something that you really want.  

Increasingly debit cards users are gaining points for their use towards airline miles, merchandise or cash.  Debit card rewards tend to be leaner that their credit card counterparts.  Banks will encourage you to 'sign' rather than use a pin, as banks receive higher usage fees from merchants for signature use versus pin use.  Either way, you're not running up a credit card bill as the transactions are deducted straight from your checking account.  

Be careful about signing up for rewards programs that charge a hefty annual fee.  All rewards programs you sign up should be free of charges.  

Online Shopping

Online Shopping can be a valuable tool in your budgeting and spending process.  But you must be careful to use it prudently and only within your means. Here are some basics of how to find the best bargains online.

Use comparison tools to aid you in finding the best deals online.  Using these sites, allows you compare quickly across the internet for the item of interest without visiting each individual site.  Some of the better ones: Shopzilla, Become.com, MySimon, Pricegrabber, & Shopping.com

Outfit your kids for less.  Internet shopping is quick (just a few clicks of the mouse), easy (no getting in the car and wasting gas going to the mall) and economical (you can easily compare prices at different outlets and grab the best bargain with a minimum amount of effort)  A few places to consider trying are:  Limited Too, WebClothes and Childrensplace.com. Each provides economical and fashionable clothing for kids

Like to have a trendy selection of discounted designer clothes plus rock bottom shipping costs?  Then try Bluefly.com.  

Waiting for that special shirt to go on sale? Then register with online stores for email alerts about sales and unadvertised bargains. Overstock.com offers an abundance of bargains.  They stock up on brand name  merchandise that retailers have to unload and pass the savings onto you. 

Like shopping at outlet malls?  RealOutlets,  OutletBound & OutletsOnline are online malls with stores that sell brand name merchandise at less than retail stores.  

Do you still want the experience of seeing, touching and testing the merchandise before buying?  Online shopping can still save you precious time, money and gas by locating local deals in your areas.  Try SalesCircular.com or Craigslist for local bargains in your area that you can go see & touch.

You can save money on electronics by buying "refurbished"  products. Refurbished products are items that were returned by the consumer or opened by the retailer and could no longer be sold as new. Some of the best sites for refurbished products are:  returnbuy.com or tigerdirect.com. You can also save dollars, by shopping at TV/Audio repair shops.  You can often buy items that have been repaired but never pickup by their owners.  You can often buy these items simple for the price of the repair.  

Do you have a gift card you received you're not going to use?  You can trade it for  a retailer that you're interested in or get cash back by going to one of the sites that specializes in gift card trading.  Try PlasticJungle.com or giftcardbuyback.com.

Additional Tips on Saving Money

You know saving is thought by some to be one of the hardest propositions known to man.  But there are several tricks and tips you can use to assist you saving money.  

Keep the change - Never spend coins or $1 bills.  Always use $5, $10 or $20 bills.  At the end of the day, deposit all your coins and $1 bills into a large jar.  When the jar is full....you have a nice little nest egg to put into your savings plan.

Keep making car payments.  If for example you are making $400/month car payments.  When you've paid off the loan, keep putting $400/month into a savings account.  When you're ready to buy a new car you've saved enough to pay cash for the car. When you buy that new car, continue to add money monthly to your savings account and then when your car wears out, you will once again have the money to pay for a new car completely in cash.

Find money.  - Never closed that old savings account?  forgot a utility deposit last time you moved?  Hunt down money you never knew or forgot you had.  An estimated one out of eight people have unclaimed money that they aren't aware of.
